Contribution of the GMU:

  • Work Package 1: Development of criteria for safety-critical encounters

The objective of this WP is to develop unified, evidence-based and objective (as much as possible and reasonable) criteria ensuring safe operations of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS), that are suitable for a collision avoidance tool and stability failure avoidance tool, as an element of an overall objective function. The criteria will allow for timely, safe-ensuring action on board a MASS with respect to other vessel, shallow ground and dangerous coincidence of sea conditions with the ship dynamic response characteristics.

  • Work Package 2: Development of algorithms for data acquisition, early detection and conflict resolution

The aim of WP2 is to develop effective algorithms for assurance of a safe operation of MASS during the whole voyage, based upon criteria elaborated within WP1. These algorithms will relate to the ship stability and collision avoidance. In WP2 a system would be created in which phases of ship data acquisition, conflict detection and conflict resolution would follow each other repeatedly.

  • Work Package 3: Development and deployment of an on-board decision system and on-shore supporting infrastructure

The objective of this WP is to develop and deploy two sensors platforms. Devices will be deployed onboard two sea-going vessels (Horyzont II and Gunnerus) to test their functionalities in a real environment under a direct supervision of ships’ crews.

  • Work Package 4: Testing, verification and revision of decision criteria

The objective of this WP is to elaborate test procedures for solution developed and perform the overall testing of both software and hardware.
